Live! OnScript—surprising Matt Lynch in front of an audience
How to Study the Bible’s Use of the Bible
Podcast Interview Announcement
A day with my student who’s now my teacher
A couple weeks back I had a chance to travel out to Wisconsin for the day to do a podcast interview with OnScript. A highlight of the trip was the chance to spend the afternoon in Dr. Matt Lynch’s Old Testament class. Matt was an outstanding student of mine back before the turn of the century. But in Wisconsin I got to be his student for a day.
Nashotah House Theological Seminary is tucked away in rural hinterlands. The great vibe of the campus makes you want to quit your job and apply as a student.

Matt’s classes that day focused on the servant songs of Isaiah and lament psalms. These are both areas within his wheelhouse. I took notes the whole time like a mad person. Matt’s seminary students were fully engaged. He did a great job of corralling them back from the New Testament to Isaiah and Psalms during many lively discussions. I especially learned to think about Sheol (the underworld) in its poetic frame, not just as an excuse to ask impossible theological questions. Here’s my class notes from that expertly delivered class moment.
Back in the 1990s I couldn’t believe I was teaching students like Matt. Though, truthfully, such outstanding students drag us professors along with them. Imagine growing old enough to go to seminary with your student as a professor. What a day!
Under the big top
They had a tent set up, so the podcast interview took place there. The good folks of Nashotah House Theological Seminary were lively, engaged listeners. Lots of great Q&A after the recording.

During the interview, I did something Matt says has never happened before on his podcast. If you are a fan, you know all about the “speed round.” Please listen to this interview about my co-authored book How to Study the Bible’s Use of the Bible.
See how Matt handles his surprise.

I want to thank Matt Lynch and the folks at OnScript as well as the gracious hosts at Nashotah House Theological Seminary. Fun. Enjoyable. Spirited. All of these in the weird academic sort of way that feels like home.

Loved the podcast episode. I got your book when it came out from a Carmen Imes recommendation and now I found your Substack from the “OnScript” mention. Glad to be here, thanks for your scholarship!
Great episode Gary! I'm here because of the mention on the podcast. I look forward to engaging in your work.
